5.0 out of five stars Excellent sound, excellent value, September 4, 2007
By J. Bakker (Mt. Nice, MI USA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Sony SA W2500 Performance Line 100 Watt Subwoofer (Electronics) If you are thinking about purchasing a subwoofer, it’s not likely that you’re a garden range movie fan or lover of music. People looking for subwoofers typically already have a decent system, but know that there’s something missing.

When it came for me to purchase one, three factors weighed in my decision: power, brand, and (of course) price. I have grown up with what I have generally believed to be a ‘healthy skepticism’ when it comes to Sony merchandise. My father had an early generation (1990ish) 5.0 Sony 250 Watt surround amp that performed very badly in just about every function. The only advantage it had over his earlier (1978) Rotel non tube amp is that it had many part inputs. The sound quality of the 50 Watt rated Rotel amp blew the Sony out of the water.

In my search for a subwoofer, I has been surprised to find so many good reviews of the Sony line. I looked for a better name than Sony, but when I compared prices, I has been compelled to give the Sony at least a listen. Comparable subs by Velodyne and others were far costly (double the cost of the Sony or more). Listening to the Sony at the stereo shop, I must say that I was very impressed.

Is the Sony sound as good as the Velodyne or another high end subwoofers that cost 2 3 times as much as the Sony? Of course not, but I quickly discovered that difference in sound quality wasn’t at all closely related to the difference in price.

Keep in mind that this is one of Sony’s smallest and lightest subs (only 25 lbs), but once I brought it home and hooked it up to my 6.1 surround system and configured the frequency and volume on the back of the sub, it seamlessly extended the low end range of my system for music and movie playback. Before I learned (by experimenting with them) how to change the levels on the back of the sub, it was quite boomy and there was some a gap between the low end on the six surround speakers and where the sub picked up. When I made the proper modifications, by trial and error, I found that this sub is an very versatile fit for my home. My family room is 17′x14′, and the back opens into a 10′x15′ living room, and the sub easily fills the room. When I crank the system for rock and roll music and movies, the sub has no problem keeping up and is easily able of playing more loudly than is safe or enjoyable.

Would I liked a bigger sub made by a better brand? Sure, but this one does the job (and then some) admirably, and for less than half the cost. This sub gets four stars as a product, but I gave it five due to very good value. If you have a big budget and can pay for to use up what it could take to purchase a speaker that really sounds better than one of these Sony subs, go for it, you won’t be disappointed. On the other hand, if you could rather use up less on a sub and still get excellent power and sound quality, this is as good as it gets without spending some number of hundred dollars.

5.0 out of five stars A great “.1″ nearly Overkill, May 25, 2007
By TechTurk (Wisconsin) See all my reviews () This review is from: Sony SA W2500 Performance Line 100 Watt Subwoofer (Electronics) This part completes my 5.1 system, all Sony. This thing can overpower the rest of the system, but sounds GREAT once it is dialed in. Power saver feature and active adjustable amp and crossover are key. I am using the sub input with the amp set to about 2/3 and the crossover blocking many of the higher frequencies from coming through it. Music is great, movies are better.

4.0 out of five stars MONSTER BASS!!!, November 11, 2007
By Matthew Vierling See all my reviews This review is from: Sony SA W2500 Performance Line 100 Watt Subwoofer (Electronics) Just so you know. . . My home theater system includes: a Sony 51 inch WEGA high definition TV, a Sony STR DG910 7.1 channel home theater receiver, a Sony DVP NS77H upscaling DVD player, a pair of Sony SSF 5000 floor speakers, one Sony SSC N5000 center channel speaker, one Sony SA W2500 150 watt subwoofer, and a pair of Sony SSB 1000 bookshelf speakers for the surrounds. Everything is Sony. Everything works with one remote control, which came with the receiver. (My review is depending on these parts being used together, which is why I am as well as all this information.)
The Sony SA W2500 subwoofer has excellent low frequency performance and was very easy to set up one RCA jack cable from my receiver to the sub, then plug it in to a wall socket. Presto!!! it is pretty small in size for a sub. The box looks constructed and robust, and it is not inordinately heavy. My only complaint is that there’s a rattle someplace in the subwoofer box at certain frequencies, and I can not find it annoying but I’ll track it down sooner or later, I hope. Focusing in the right total of bass took many time as I listened to some number of movies while adjusting the crossover and volume settings, tweaking the bass EQ on my receiver, and also moving the sub around the room to different places. But the last results were certainly worth the time. No distortion (just that rattle). Fat low end sound that you may feel. My neighbors are most likely ticked off. Lots of power for a small or medium size living room. Great for the price! Four stars because of that pesky rattle, otherwise this could be the perfect subwoofer for a small or average home theater system. Matches all my other Sony speakers. I hope this review helps you.

5.0 out of five stars Great Sony 3D Soundbar, August 25, 2011
By LDB (Florida) See all my reviews () This review is from: Sony HTCT550W 3D Sound Bar Home Theater System with Wireless Subwoofer (Electronics) As common another great Sony Sound Bar; Excellent value for the price; Loaded with technology to manage all the new multichannel audio technologies Dolby, DD+, DDTrue HD, DTS etc. And 3D pass through.

After reading the mixed reviews I was a bit nervous about installing this sound bar. But, now that I have it connected and configured properly with my new 3D TV, I could not be happier. I found I can crank up the volume on the sound bar and experience deep sub woofer bass to respectable levels aka, really deafening and punchy with the capability to hear all the meant sound track goodies.

Pros:
Really big sound with deep sub woofer punch not bad at “simulating” surround sound affects)
Quick & easy setup. As already mentioned below it really takes longer to unpack it than to connect to your TV and blu ray player
Attractive thin sound bar design with a wireless sub woofer (note: SW needs to be placed near an AC outlet other than that you may move the S/W around the room as you like)
Handles all the new multichannel audio technologies that come with your blu ray disks to include all the different Dolby Digital and DTS audio signals
Three HDMI ports and one HDMI out; so you may be able to easliy pass all your equipment through the Receiver, will include and optical port as well

Cons:
Because it is so easy to setup I think many may fail to read the manual ensuing in a less then best configuration and sound effect
I went to two local retail stores to hear this system before I ordered it from Amazon. It sounded horribly weak with no bass in both store demos till at the last store I asked if we could change the AMP menu settings.
If you use something other than high speed HDMI cables I do not think you may be able to experience all this system has to offer
(I agree with below reviewer comment) Separate Receiver may cause issues for wall mounted TVs

Here’s what I found worked for me:

Use newer standard HDMI high speed cables only that means newer 1.3 or any 1.4 1.4 will include ARC support HDMI cables not costly HDMI cables just the new high speed cables).
Turn off the Linear pulse code modulation (LPCM) on the Audio Out on your Blu ray player or game system. Instead choose “Bitstream” for Audio Out on the devices you connect to your Sound Bar.
Your satellite, cable, or over the air box/signal may not broadcast Dolby Digital or DTS sound tracks many of the time depending upon the program (don’t blame this on the sound bar). Throughout these transmits you may experience lower quality sound. Use a blu ray player and blu ray disk to test this systems sound capabilities)
Take time to understand the AMP menu on the receiver. Read the manual ; ) this is where the right settings make all the difference between a lousy sound bar experience and what you projected when you bought this sound bar.
And , Turn Off your TV speakers when you want to use this system. If you leave your TV speakers on and use the sound bar simultaneously then you may hear that awful “thin” hollow sound I heard many complain about

Try these Amp Menu Settings on the receiver decrease the SW or Bass if these settings sound too low/deep for you):
Level: CNT +4, SW +6
Tone: Bass +5 or 6, Treble +3
Audio: Dual Mono: Main/Sub

Other Receiver settings:
DRC: Off
Sound Field: Movie

Note: For really BIG sound try rising the master volume +15 on the Receiver (independently) before you sync the TV volume with the Receiver Volume.

5.0 out of five stars Love this Sony, for its Sound, HDMI inputs & price, July 27, 2011
By SP See all my reviews This review is from: Sony HTCT550W 3D Sound Bar Home Theater System with Wireless Subwoofer (Electronics) After many of research on Speaker system overall and about this product, I decided to give it a attempt. So far I’m happy with the buy. I live in an apartment with living room size of around 20×20. So adding a high end true surround sound system (as many experts could suggest) wasn’t in my plan. So I decided to get a soundbar system (which many experts frown upon), for the compact, movable and decent sound which was enough enough for my Apt. I’m already a Sony TV/BD player owner and so the 1st choice was this product. It’s easy to setup. And the biggest draw for me this product (other than being Sony product to go with with my TV/BD) was it has three HDMI inputs. In its class, I believe this is one of the merchandise that gives three HDMI input which is good enough to hook up my Cable, BD & Media player. All the Cable, BD or PS# etc. HD output goes into the receiver and there’s one output to TV HDMI in. So you do not have to change TV input, only the receiver input changes. Also there’s a optical cable provided to connect the TV audio output back to receiver in case you use another part connected straight to TV instead of the receiver. Also once the reciever is turned on, the TV audio is automatically muted and the vice versa, which is a convinient feature, say if you like to just have TV speakers and not the big sound from this system when it’s real quite. The wireless subwoofer setup is easy, did not have to configure anything. It was plug & play. Only issue is the wireless subwoofer needs power, so its wireless, you still have to put it close to a power source. Another advantage I saw using this is if you’re Sony TV/BD owner, you could use Sony Bravia to configure it as unified remote. This is convenient and have information in manual to configure it. But I’m a Logitech Harmony One remote user and have not tinkered with Bravia. Logitech configuration was easy with this product being listed on their system. The subwoofer I thought did not have that big an effect at 1st, but when I increased the treble & bass, it seemed to be alright. Again this isn’t a true surround system, but still the sound ofcourse will be much better than TV speakers for sure. It also depends on one’s room configuration since I read (on AVS forum) that you need furniture or another objects for the sound to reflect upon to get many sense of surround sound. There are many sound modes available Movie, Music, Std, News, Sports etc. Which enhances the sound output therefore which I really like. Have seen an instance where the picture/sound had mismatch, but you have an choice to do an Audio Sync in the system. Once you turn is on, have not seen it after that. The best experience I had was watching BD movies. Really enhances the sound quality and able to see the full vibrancy in this mode in comparison to others. In general I’m happy with the product and could recommend. Of course the choice to get a audio system depends on so many factors from the budget, size of room, present system etc and once you jump into audio expert forums like AVS, they can bring in more clearness with their tell.

5.0 out of five stars Big sound for a average price, June 16, 2011
By George See all my reviews () This review is from: Sony HTCT550W 3D Sound Bar Home Theater System with Wireless Subwoofer (Electronics) I bought this Sony HT CT550W Sound Bar to go with my 55″ Sony Bravia KDL 55NX810 3D TV, and I am happy I did. For those of you with a newer Sony TV, I could recommend this Sound Bar not only for it is big and full sound, but for it is compatibility with Sony TV’s also.

My Sony TV has the speakers in the back, so the sound reflects off the wall and is hardly an ideal place for best sound. Since I have a smaller family room, only 14′ or so with an opening to the kitchen on one side, a wired setup wasn’t going to work well. This Sound Bar lets me to mount the speaker on the wall or under the TV and to place the subwoofer anyplace in the room. This really cleaned the look of my family room up and really increased the sound. I was not expecting much since it is not a 5.1 system, but it nearly feels like one with the way the speaker is engineered. Sound looks to envelop you when you’re sitting on the sofa, and the subwoofer is deafening and punchy. I have listened to some number of stations on Slacker radio through my TV and the bass is great. I am not sure why the other review said the subwoofer has been muffled sounding, but it’s quite deafening and punchy for me. My biggest worry on this was if the subwoofer could be clear and punchy, and it really is. The speaker seems it really has six speakers inside, so the crossover can separate the mids from the highs. Everything is routed through the major box, which also has FM capability. The nicest thing is the Bravia Sync, which lets me use my TV remote to control sound, power, and other parts of the speaker. So far I am happy with this Sound Bar, and had by far the lowest price. Do not be intimated by other reviews, I have listed to the Polk Audio, Boston Acoustics, an Samsung, and so far this is the best I have heard.

Pros:
Clear audio from center speaker
Loud with little distortion
Attractive speaker
Wireless Sub
Bravia Sync
FM radio

Cons:
Subwoofer may be a bit more tight, but good already not a real concern
Manuals list blockage at three ohms.Really? QC your web site Sony

Overall: greatly Recommend

5.0 out of five stars Polk PSW 10: Great, with many reservations, February 3, 2006
By Ref Stanton “Refefer” (Northern Virginia) See all my reviews This review is from: Polk Audio PSW10 10 Inch Monitor Series Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black) (Electronics) I bought this subwoofer about two months ago and since then have given it an broad listening test. Following is a list of things I could do to enhance sound quality also as many reservations I have toward it.

Before I start off, I could like to clarify one thing about the PSW 10 that may unjustly turn off possible purchasers from it: it runs at 50 watts RMS. In the world of music and sound systems, one of the biggest misconceptions out there’s that wattage directly correlates with how deafening a speaker is. THIS isn’t NECCESARILY TRUE! The efficiency of the driver establishes how deafening it gets at some wattage, not only the total of power you are pumping into it! This is why you may be able to purchase, as an example, computer speakers that boast 400watts of power and have them easily massacred by volume by speaker set ups with half the power (for more examples, compare computer speaker systems to counter systems to a true sound system. You’ll find the volume, at a given wattage, tends to increase as you go down the spectrum).

I found the PSW 10 easily competed by volume with every other sub in it is range, as well as those running at twice to three times the power RMS. If you want to prove it to yourself, run down to your local Circuit City (who sells Polk subs) and sound test it yourself.

Now, onto the guts of the review.

1. As far as entry subwoofers come, this is most likely the best bang for your buck that you may find bar none, particularly considering the quality of the build. Built around high quality medium density fiberboard and using a greatly economical 10″ driver, the PSW 10 manages to bang also, if not louder, than other subwoofers in this group, in spite of running at 50 watts RMS.

2. The sound quality is excellent, with little distortion at high volumes above 50 hz or with full excursion easily being reached due to ported design. In the 40hz 50hz range, the polk begins to show the restrictions of an entry level sub, the sound becoming somewhat more muddied (though not horribly so) with expanded length sounds(ie. A hellicopter landing slowly) while staying crisp for burst sound (ie. A gunshot or bassdrum). Below the 40hz, it is pretty much non functional as a subwoofer. I should also stress that no entry subwoofer has any redeeming qualities below 40hz.

3. Music is where this subwoofer really shines! it is bass is perfect for each genre of music (my tastes tend to be a bit ecclectic and as such I tested it with Classical, Hip Hop, Electronica, Rock, and Jazz) you may be able to throw at it. I was most impressed when playing The Chieftans “Ballad of the Irish Horse” album and may have sworn the drums played in the room (a testament to the quality of polk’s design). Deep bass is 99.9 of the time is restricted to above 50hz, right in the sweet spot of the polk, and as such, the bass lines in every Rap song I tried (the extreme being Wolfpak Gangsta Rap and Kanye West Golddigger) was quite remarkable, correct and crisp. When playing the 1812 Overature, the cannons were well made, if somewhat muddied (as it’s one of the not many songs that adventures below 50hz) but in general good. I was impressed with the sound quality of the polk in music.

4. That being said, this subwoofer is ideal for music and will be disappointing for those who wish to use it for movie watching. While it’s useful to add it to any non subwoofer setup, the 10″ driver struggles to hit the low lows with the sound becoming muddied with deep, deep bass of any length. I found this to be a problem with all entry subwoofers I have tried, not just the polk, so take this with a grain of salt.

Overall, this subwoofer is most likely the best entry subwoofer you may be able to get bar none.

TIPS FOR MAKING IT SOUND BETTER!!!

1. 1st thing of note: Like all quality entry level subwoofers, great sound comes with the sacrifice of volume. This sub works best in smaller rooms, say 20×10 maximum. Any bigger and the sound will begin to get lost in the room and sound strained.

2. Most subwoofers work the best along the front wall of your sound system, in the corner. This but isn’t a cardinal rule. To find the best place for the subwoofer (this works for any sub for your information), place the subwoofer where you could usually be sitting, listening to it. Play a song and walk around the room till you find place where the bass sounds the best. Move the sub to that place and it should be ideally placed!

3. One shortcoming about the Polk is the lack of an LFE input: you only get RCA and speaker line inputs meaning that there’s no way you may be able to bypass the interior crossover of the sub. Considering the market it is aiming for, this should not be too big of a problem for majority of people, but holders with good receivers may be a bit vexed by this. As well, don’t hookup the sub through the speaker line: it will lose a just total of sound quality from forcing the bass through small gauge wires. Hook it up through the RCA if at all possible and you’ll be largely rewarded.

In summation, in spite of the reservations inherent of the entry level subwoofer class (and LFE port), this is an excellent subwoofer which warrants all the praise it is been to get.

5.0 out of five stars Excellent sound, May 15, 2009
By Frank J. Perricone (People’s Republic of Vermont) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Polk Audio PSW10 10 Inch Monitor Series Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black) (Electronics) I am using this with an Onkyo TR 606 alongside a Toshiba 62″ DLP HDTV and a full set of Polk speakers, and the sound quality is extraordinary.

The only caveat is that the subwoofer input has two connectors, but you really only have to connect one of them. The manual is far from clear about this, and lots of people will most likely use up extra on a Y cable, or worse still, put in an adapter which will add both cost and loss of fidelity. But just connecting to the left input works good. Subwoofers are mono nevertheless and the double inputs are mainly there to make certain wiring configurations easier, not to add more sound fidelity.

5.0 out of five stars Polk Audio PSW10 Powered Subwoofer, June 1, 2007
By zinm See all my reviews This review is from: Polk Audio PSW10 10 Inch Monitor Series Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black) (Electronics) While I looked for sub woofer I compared PSW10 and PSW404. PSW404 sounds better but for the price $110 and $250 at J&R I opted for PSW10. The sale agent dropped the price for me though they still selling PSW10 for $200 here. Those of you who worry about no LFE input, that should not be a problem. All you must do is connect the sub woofer output of the receiver to either the right or left input on the sub woofer. , then set the variable low pass filter on the sub woofer to the highest setting. This will set the interior low pass filter above the low pass filter frequency given by your receiver and create an LFE input. Or you may use a RCA cable to offer a connection to both inputs on the sub woofer from the LR pre out from the receiver. Then change the cross over frequency from the woofer as wanted. It sounds a little louder and better for me. I bought Monster sub woofer cable and it sounds no better than RCA cable. Attempt not to waste your money on this. It has 7.4 out of ten in CNet ranking and it’s #6 in editor’s top list for sub woofers. I paired PSW10 with R300, RTi4, R150, CSi3 and Denon 1906 receiver. Primarily used for HDTV over the air, DVD movies and many FM. It sounds many better than the sub woofer from RM6750. It carries five years warranty but be sure you purchase from Authorize dealer. For the price I paid I’m more than happy with it. I hope this helps to your choice.
